Creative Composites is focused on new and creative ideas in the rapidly evolving bio-composite industry. Biocomposites, sometimes also referred to as Natural Fiber Reinforced Plastics (NFRP), combine various plant fibers and resins to form unique composite materials. Biocomposites are a viable and sometimes preferable alternative for traditional steel and fiberglass applications. They have proven to be lighter, stronger, more flexible and more cost effective for a wide range of applications. Compared to traditional composites like fiberglass, they require fewer environmentally unfriendly chemicals, reduce EPA requirements, and are easier to dispose of. Their inherent sound dampening properties mean they hold great potential in the acoustic materials market.

The ingredients to make bio-composites can be grown in the fields of Iowa and the Midwest. Fiber from alternative crops like kenaf can be used for fiber reinforcement. Residue from traditional crops can be used as filler in some products. Prompted by our research in this area, a farmer’s coop has grown test plots of kenaf for the past 3 years. Their results, as well as other research, shows that kenaf could be a viable alternative crop in central Iowa.

Creative Composites is committed to creating new technologies and processes that would benefit manufacturers and farmers alike. These new technologies may introduce manufactures to innovative ideas and diversity of products possible from biocomposites.

Using techniques from traditional mold design as a baseline, we have developed molding standards to be used to form natural fiber materials.
Extensive research and development in biocomposites has given us a unique understanding of how fibers and resins perform and react together. This has led to the design of processing equipment tailored to the unique requirements of natural fiber composites. This technology can be utilized in creation of new equipment or can be retrofit into existing plastic forming equipment.
Our proprietary processes are on the leading edge of the rapidly evolving biocomposites industry.
Creative Composites is continuously developing new technologies that combine natural fibers with resins to form a wide variety of parts. For example, we have recently developed a solid lubricant biocomposite that combines soy based lubricant, natural fibers and traditional resins. The resulting material can be molded into any shape and is currently being tested in multiple applications as an industrial lubricant.
Technologies developed at Creative Composites have the potential to impact existing manufacturing and agricultural industries.
Our acoustic research has led to the development of applications that exploit the inherent sound dampening characteristics of natural fiber.
Natural fiber composites are very diverse in their properties and can be custom tailored depending upon the customer requirements. Products range from hard rigid composites that can be utilized for structural applications to materials with acoustic and vibration dampening characteristics.
